Friendship and Politics: Essays in Political Thought In the history of Western political philosophy, the concept of friendship has long been a central theme, but it has lost its prominence in recent times. This collection of essays aims to revive the idea of friendship for philosophical investigation, inviting readers to consider how our political principles manifest in our private lives and providing a timely corrective to contemporary confusions surrounding this experience. Part One explores the thoughts of ancient philosophers such as Plato, Aristotle, and Cicero, while Part Two delves into the treatments of friendship by Christian thinkers like Augustine, Aquinas, Luther, and Calvin. Part Three examines the views of modern thinkers like Hobbes, Montaigne, the American founders, and Tocqueville. The volume concludes with two essays that address postmodern fragmentation and the dynamics of power within the modern state.
