Arthur Conan Doyle's historical novel Exiles describes events in France at the end of the 17th century. The reshuffle of forces and the political situation in the country ruled by Louis XIV and his new favorite Marquis de Maintenon force the main characters of the book to make a difficult choice and exchange the Old World for the New, where the sword is replaced by a carbine, and the owner of a powdered wig can be scalped. The translation of the novel is published according to the 1928 edition of P.P. Soikin with the addition of the missing 31 chapters. The book is decorated with illustrations by two artists: Frenchman Charles Jois and Swede Toure de Tulstrup, who moved to the USA.
