The commandments are the anchor points of Jewish existence, the fulfillment of which, in fact, forms the lifestyle of a believing Jew. therefore, it is so important to determine what exactly is included in the concept of commandments. According to the chain of oral tradition (see Babylonian Talmud, Makot, 23b), we are given knowledge of their number, but neither the Tanakh nor the Mishnah or Talmud give a list of them. Several versions of such a list have survived to our time, but all of them were surpassed by the popularity and breadth of distribution of Rambam's "book of commandments." In it, he sets out both the principles underlying the list and the wording of the commandments themselves.
