In the panorama of French literature of the twentieth century, the figure of Henri Monterlan (1895-1972) stands out for the many masks that covered the true nature of his creative and personal life, whole series of hoaxes, organized not so much in order to bring to life a special view of the world, and such a mass of various kinds of legends, some of which saw the light not without the writer's own participation, that back in 1949 one of the critics could rightfully notice, that no other author has been written about and said as much nonsense as Monterlan.
