The collection is devoted to the problems of history, culture and source study of the Golden Horde (Jochi ulus) - one of the most powerful and vast states of the Middle Ages. Articles written by historians from Moscow, St. Petersburg and Kazan explore the circumstances of the formation of the Golden Horde, its initial stay in the Mongol Empire and its gradual independence; patterns of ethnic and social development, culture and urban life; features of the state structure, relations with the Russian principalities. Some details of the history of the Turkic states that arose on the territory of the Golden Horde after its collapse are also considered. One of the articles publishes a translation of the unique geographical description of the Golden Horde, which was compiled by the medieval Arab author al-Kalkashandi.
