Polovtsy or Kipchaks - a nomadic Turkic people who lived in the historical region known as the Polovtsian steppe or Desht-i-Kipchak. At the beginning of the XI century, they advanced from the Volga region to the Black Sea steppes, displacing the Pechenegs and Torcs from there. Then the Polovtsy crossed the Dnieper and reached the lower reaches of the Danube, thus settling the entire Great Steppe from the Danube to the Irtysh, which from that time in the eastern sources began to be called Desht-i-Kipchak (Kipchak steppe). During the formation of the Golden Horde (mid-13th century), the Kipchaks assimilated small Mongol-speaking tribes and transferred their language to them. Later, the Kypchak language formed the basis of the modern Kypchak group of languages.
