Nikolai Sapunov is one of the brightest and distinctive figures in Russian art of the twentieth century. A wonderful painter and draftsman, he lived a short life. Sapunov's short life was tense to the limit, assembled into a tight energy knot. He was formed as a creative person in a kind of whirlwind stream of innovations that formed then in Russian cultural life, when everything and everyone changed, new aesthetic principles took shape, art began to realize itself as the main driving force of society. Sapunov was at the epicenter of all changes, and he himself was a participant in them.
