Death is the most eternal truth of our lives. Whoever you are, you will probably die one day, but in the modern era this happens in a new way and is otherwise perceived by all participants in the process. The young American doctor Haider Warraich wrote a book where he tried to give the widest possible panorama of modern death - from the molecular mechanisms of programmed cell death to the legal battles around the voluntary euthanasia of terminally ill people. Compared to the middle of the 20th century, all aspects of the end of our life have radically changed - from what we die when we die, where we die and how we die. As a result of the progress of medical science and medical technology, even the very definition of death is now formulated differently - what can we say about its ecology, epidemiology, economics and ethics. During this time, American medicine has come a long way in mastering new approaches to death and the dying - a path that, in some respects, Russia has yet to enter. In her debut book, Dr. Warraich talks about today's death rituals and its modern language - and, based on her experience as an attending physician in the intensive care unit of a major American hospital, thinks about what was better in our ancestors and in what we clearly surpassed them.
