Saint Dionysius the Great, head of the Alexandria Announcing School and Bishop of Alexandria in 247-264. An enlightened defender of Christian doctrine from the attacks of pagan philosophers, an unbending guardian of the purity of Christian truth from distortions, as it was subjected to in the false teachings of heretics and schismatics, St. Dionysius was especially famous for his wisdom in managing the Church and guiding believers on the path to moral improvement and eternal salvation. According to the immutable judgment of the Church, he was the first to receive the name of the Great, which fully corresponds to its real meaning in the history of Christianity.
