This edition is the first to publish in modern spelling and without abbreviations the text of the book by the outstanding Russian musician Nikolai Karlovich Metner "Muse and Fashion" (Paris, YMCA-Press, 1935). The publication is accompanied by an introductory article by A.L. Rychkov on the history of the publication, materials on the history of the creation of the book in excerpts from the correspondence of S.V. Rachmaninov, N.K. Metner, E.K. Metner and Vyach. Ivanov (part of the letters is published for the first time), as well as comments, which are a chapter of the German-language monograph of prof. Higher School of Music (Lübeck, Germany) by Christoph Flamm "Russian composer Nikolai Metner" (1995). The book "Muse and Fashion" reflects not only musicological, but also philosophical and aesthetic results of N.K. Metner and can be of interest to both musicologists and all researchers and connoisseurs of the culture of the Russian Silver Age, many of whose outstanding representatives continued their work in exile.
