Modern ideas about science and the organization of scientific work are considered, the foundations of the methodology of science in machine-building industries are proposed. The history of engineering science is shown, information is given about outstanding domestic and foreign scientists and scientific schools. An overview of methods for assessing the most promising areas of modern mechanical engineering from the point of view of science is proposed.
