We try to forget our past - especially those moments when a considerable part of humanity did not show its best qualities, ruthlessly and sophisticated destroying others. These others could be people of a different race or nation, or they could be compatriots who profess a different faith or other political views. Or innocent people who simply fell under the skating rink of historical necessity. Aboriginal reservations in Australia, slave camps in the United States, gulags and Auschwitz (Buchenwald, Majdanek, etc.) were not much different from each other. The apology of captivity for some and impunity for others first destroyed human nature, and then state systems that generate violence by some against others. True, only in the Gulag and in Nazi extermination camps, executioners often became victims and filled the empty barracks, which until recently they guarded themselves. It is clear that humanity wants to preserve a good memory of itself for its own offspring.
