The strongest have always survived in retail. Small private stores fell victim to department stores, and department stores in turn gave way to malls and discounters. But no trading concept has been as destructive as the concept of "category killers" - "big boxes," specialty stores like Barnes & Noble, PETsMART and Circuit City. No grocery store has ever become as significant as the Wal-Mart chain.
