The author, who has been dealing with the topic of Byzantine treatises on military affairs for more than 35 years, has collected in this publication, unique in Russian historiography, his articles on ancient and Byzantine military theory and practice since 1965, including those newly written for this book. The collection is divided into three parts. The first includes general reviews of monuments of military thought of the ancient period and Byzantium of the VI-X centuries, as well as articles on cross-cutting issues of research on these monuments. The second part includes articles on individual treatises, and the third - articles covering certain issues of military practice on the material of treatises or in comparison with it.
