Commentary on the first book compiled by Proclus The beginnings of Euclid were first translated into Russian in full. Proclus' treatise is the only surviving ancient commentary on Euclid. From is of primary interest both in terms of the history of mathematics and its teaching, and in terms of the history of philosophy. Proclus sets out in the treatise his views on the nature of mathematics and mathematical thinking, discusses the structure of mathematical texts, gives a brief outline of the history of ancient mathematics. The treatise contains a discussion of the axioms, postulates and definitions of Euclid, and also provides a detailed commentary on all 47 sentences of I book of Beginnings.
