Battle of Vyazma - the battle of October 22 (November 3), 1812 near Vyazma of the Russian avant-garde under the command of Miloradovich with the retreating French army during the Patriotic War of 1812. The monument "To the leaders and soldiers who fell on the streets of Vyazma in 1812" was laid in August 1912 in honor of the heroes of the battle with French troops. Now this monument is known as the monument to the "Valiant Ancestors." The monument is an obelisk of gray granite. It is crowned by a double-headed eagle with outstretched wings. With the beak of his left head, he torments the defeated French banner, and with his right he looks vigilantly to the west, where the defeated enemies ran. On the front side of the monument is the coat of arms of Vyazma and bronze copies of the medal in memory of the Patriotic War of 1812 with the image of the All-Seeing Eye and the text: "Not to us. Not to us. And thy name." On the board installed below, the text is carved: "1812-1912. Valiant ancestors from grateful descendants. Battles near the city of Vyazma and its environs August 15,16,17 and October 22, 1812."
