The main themes of the works of the Belgian medievalist historian Henri Pirenne (1862-1935) were medieval cities. This work is devoted to one of the most interesting topics in the social history of Europe. Being the result of many years of research, the work examines the great achievements of urban evolution from the end of antiquity to the middle of the nineteenth century. According to the author, this work cannot be considered a didactic guide.
