In his book, the famous American Shakespearean scholar S. Schenbaum, in a strictly chronological sequence, thoroughly and scientifically objectively sets out facts and documents collected over several centuries related to the biography of the great English poet, one of the outstanding playwrights in the world. Without touching on Shakespeare's work, S. Schenbaum describes the history of the city of Stratford-upon-Avon, where he was born and buried, the pedigree of the poet, talks about his family and descendants, about Stratford Grammar School, where the future playwright was introduced to ancient mythology, history and literature, which were widely reflected in his plays. The book recreates the specific historical conditions in which Shakespeare's life proceeded, shows the beginning of his acting career and dramatic activity, as well as the last years of his life in Stratford, provides information about the theaters and theatrical life of London in the late XVI - early XVII centuries, tells about several contemporaries of Shakespeare involved in his fate, and about some everyday details of that time.
