The greatest Christian mystic Jakob Böhme (1575-1624) was called to appear as the new prophet of the Great Reformation in the midst of a critical era of religious schism in Germany and Europe. Comprehending the position of man in the world, his highest appointment as the "child of God," he sought to penetrate the unconditional essence of the human spirit, rooted in the most triune God, who has His Image in man. Hence the Boehm understanding of the inner essence of a single Christian Church, which consists in the continuous, incessant struggle of the spiritual principle of freedom with the self-confidence of external "worship." One of the central treatises in Boehme's work, "On the Triple Life of Man" (1620), is first offered to a wide circle of the reading public.
