The book is the first generalizing study of the historiography of the Norman problem from the moment of its emergence in Russian science until the early 1990s. It proposes an original periodization, evaluates the contribution of many researchers of the past in a new way, for the first time analyzes in detail the early stage of the archaeological study of the Norman problem.
