This book chronicles my recovery from codependency one recipe at a time. If you've found this book, you've probably been impacted by someone who struggles with alcohol and or substance abuse. Perhaps you are in the middle of a crisis. Maybe it's too hard to fathom what your next step may be. In recovery, we learn to put first things first. I lost myself in the kitchen. My life revolved around what I needed to do to serve and save the people I loved. My adopted son was severely malnourished when we got him home, so I obsessed over every bite he ate. After both my husband's parents passed away from cancer, fear drove me to control my husband's health by cooking only the healthiest foods for him. (Think steamed broccoli every meal.) Balancing all of these special dietary concerns on a tight budget grew into an overwhelming obession that hurt us all. By the time I entered recovery for my co-dependency, I was too paralyzed by anxiety to buy groceries or cook for my family. In recovery, I am finding serenity in the kitchen. I can quiet my anxious mind by focusing on chopping, measuring, and sauteing. Food tastes better now. Relationships more enjoyable. If you are hurt by someone's addiction, I hope these recipes will give you the serene distraction I found in preparing them.
