The battle of the city of Krasnoye (now a village in the Smolensk region) between the Russian army under the command of Mikhail Illarionovich Kutuzov and the retreating army of Napoleon took place on November 3-6 (15-18), 1812. For four days of hostilities, the French suffered heavy losses - about ten thousand people killed, from 19 to 30 thousand prisoners, and also lost 209 guns and six regimental banners. Losses of Russian troops amounted to about two thousand people killed and wounded. However, Napoleon still managed to avoid complete defeat and continue the retreat. For success in the battle, Kutuzov was awarded the Order of St. George of the 1st class and granted him an honorary prefix to the name "Smolensky." On the northern outskirts of Krasnoye there is a monument to the soldiers who fell in battle - a tetrahedral pyramid crowned with a cross.
