The reader can look at the same events - the life of Egyptian Alexandria before and during World War II - through the eyes of completely different people. The decline of colonialism, anti-British rebellion, political and private life - phenomena and people become much clearer when you can see them from different angles. The author himself called tetralogy an experiment in the study of the continuum and subject-object connections based on the material of modern love. In the first three books, "Justine," "Balthazar," and "Mountolive," these connections are gradually revealed in all their complexity and entanglement, united by time and place. In the fourth book - "Clea" - the author connects the storylines together and makes it possible to trace the development of relationships and destinies in time, completing the narrative.
