As a result of studies in recent years on Elbrus, fundamentally new results have been obtained in the field of studying the meteorological regime, the mass balance of glaciers, climate variability and the natural environment according to glacial cores. Using data from space surveys, ground and aerial radar measurements, the change in area, thickness and volume of glaciers was estimated. Long-term studies of the mass balance of the Garabashi Glacier have shown that the fastest decline in glaciation over the past 130 years is currently taking place, reflecting a significant increase in summer air temperature (0.5-0.7 ° C over 30 years) with almost unchanged precipitation and an increase in incoming shortwave solar radiation since the 1980s.
