Although modern academic science rejects the version of the Slavic nature of the Rugs, claiming that the Rugs are an East German tribe of the Great Migration era, a number of Russian historians, in the 19th and 20th centuries, confidently say otherwise. Slavic historian of pre-revolutionary Russia V.I. Lamansky considered the Ruyan and Rugov to be one tribe. The Soviet historian G. Kuzmin wrote that the names rugi, horns, ruzi, rus, ruyans refer to the same people. The modern historian S.V. Perevezentsev, in his popular science works, also defends the point of view of the Slavic Rug.
