The leadership of the Russian Empire needed a "small victorious war" to strengthen the authority of state power. It was supposed to be a victory over the wild Asians. In reality, however, militaristic Japan was a strong developing power. And the events of 1904-1905 in the Far East became the first sign of the beginning of the end for imperial Russia. The war so scandalously lost could not end with anything else.
