The collective work of Soviet Japanese scholars studied the history of Japan from the period of late feudalism (the Tokugawa era of the 17th-19th centuries) to the era of imperialism (the beginning of the 20th century), when the "Land of the Rising Sun" turned into a great power and built its colonial empire. In accordance with the main periods of the new history of Japan, this work is divided into three parts: the era of late feudalism, the era of industrial capitalism and the era of imperialism. Much attention is paid to economic processes. In the center of study and presentation is the class struggle, the struggle of the masses - the peasantry and the urban poor during the feudal period, the working class and the peasantry during the period of capitalism - against the reactionary and aggressive policies of the ruling classes. Culture and ideology are also given some attention, although not enough due to the poor knowledge of this issue.
