The monograph is devoted to the presentation and critical consideration of the general theory of relativity and the variational formalism used in it. These questions are set out in Part I of the monograph. Further, it contains some development and generalization of this formalism under the assumption that the connection between the Ricci tensor and the energy-momentum tensor can be carried out not using a constant, but using a matrix (tensor or pseudotensor).
