Hedrick Smith, who won the Pulitzer Prize in 1974 for his reporting from Moscow, is a co-author of "The Pentagon Papers" and a veteran of "The New York Times" newspaper, serving as its correspondent in Saigon, Paris, Cairo and Washington. During his three-year stay in Moscow, he skewered the Soviet Union "as far as time and the Soviet authorities allowed."
