Moreau's victory at Hohenlinden temporarily overshadowed one of Napoleon's most brilliant victories - Marengo. Historians put this success of Moreau on a par with Austerlitz and Jena. During the coup d'état of the 18th Brumaire, Moreau supported Napoleon, but was later involved in a conspiracy against the government, arrested, tried and expelled from the country.
