Every step into the unknown is dangerous - everyone knows this truth. But on themselves, as on experimental volunteers, few experience it. And in the forefront of these few are travelers and pioneers. Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) is a great and tragic figure, even by the strict standards of harsh polar explorers. Not figuratively, but literally, he laid down his life to reach the South Pole of the Earth. Competing with the expedition of Royal Amundsen, Scott and his comrades reached the pole, discovered the Norwegian flag there - and died on the way back.
