The 5th SS Panzer Division “Wiking” emerged on October 22, 1943, from the renaming of the 5th SS Panzer Grenadier Division “Wiking”.. At this time, the division had a HKL based on the Dnieper between Kanev and Cherkassy. On 13 November 1943, the Red Army to establish a bridgehead across the Dnieper in Cherkassy. In the ensuing heavy fighting, she managed a month later to conquer Cherkassy.
