The town turns out to celebrate with Maypoles, bonfires, and Yohopa ceremonial dances to welcome the coming summer.During the last week in April, the town is preparing for the grand opening of Gideon's Grimoire, a new occult bookstore on the Vardo Town Square, when Polly, an elderly employee of the bookstore, is found dead after foraging for Mayapples near the mysterious Mandrake Cottage. The Medical Examiner says the woman could have died of stress caused by fright. The local Yohopa shaman and Perrie's Aunt Azalea believe a Land Spirit or one of the Fae caused the woman's death. Perrie's psychic senses kick into gear as more evidence of the Fae appear in her a circle of mushrooms sprouts after a storm; mysterious lights pulsate beneath a fallen hawthorn tree. Her appearance marks the launch of her latest and most anticipated book, Queen of Wands . Thousands of fantasy fans flock to Vardo to dance around the many Maypoles and to celebrate the book launch. They dress in costumes, reveling into the wee hours and parading around bonfires on May Eve.
