The book of the British researcher and trade unionist tells about a unique attempt to build a democratic and socially just society in one of the regions of the Russian Empire that collapsed in 1917 - in Georgia. Here, the revolution brought to power the Social Democratic (Menshevik) party, which sought to carry out deep political and socio-economic transformations not by suppressing freedom, as in Bolshevik Russia, but on the basis of free people's self-government. Despite all the difficulties and problems, the experiment in building democratic socialism in Georgia, interrupted in 1921 by the intervention of the Red Army, clearly demonstrated the possibility of a third way of development, alternative to both red and white authoritarianism.
