The many battles of the Pacific War during the latter stages of WW2 came about as US forces fought almost island by island to remove Japanese domination of the region with similarly ferocious encounters happening at sea. The fact that Japan had broken earlier peace treaties by quietly building fortified harbours in ready for such regional dominance is often overlooked.
