It is 284AD. The boy Constantine is the son of an immigrant mother and an absent father, living in a backwater of the Roman Empire. Taken, with mixed emotions and against his will, to meet the man his mother claims fathered him, he ventures through freezing mountains and vicious brigands, travelling with brutal imperial spies. He eventually finds a fresh life as his father's heir and grows up swiftly as more responsibilities are given to him and he learns quickly from skilled exponents of the art of war. He puts these new-found skills into practice when he finds himself in the midst of the most significant civil war of the third century as his father, Constantius, fights to establish himself amongst the entourage of the Emperor Diocletian's closest companions and most trusted generals. The challenges do not end there as Constantine fights at his father's right-hand to defeat threats to the imperial peace and maintain the new Emperor's power.
