A generation ago, scholars saw interest groups as the single most important element in the American political system. Today, the influence of such groups is perceived as marginal. Based on extensive research, political scientists Frank Baumgartner and Beth Leech show that scholars have not veered drastically from one extreme to the other, but instead, political science has changed.
