General information on polymers and methods of their production are given. Their physicochemical properties are briefly considered. The results of the study of phase transitions in solutions, mixtures and gels of polymers in a mechanical field (under tension, compression and shear deformation, under the influence of positive and negative external pressure), as well as outside the field, published over the past 60 years, are summarized and analyzed.
