Edgar Allan Poe's THE NARRATIVE OF ARTHUR GORDON PYM OF NANTUCKET follows the increasingly bizarre adventure of young Arthur Gordon Pym, a stowaway aboard the whaling ship 'Grampus.' Pym's voyage seems cursed, as he falls victim to a series of misfortunes, including shipwreck, a mutiny and cannibalism. Jules Verne's AN ANTARCTIC MYSTERY continues THE NARRATIVE OF ARTHUR GORDON PYM OF NANTUCKET. Set in the sub-Antarctic and in Antarctica, the story follows the adventures of an expedition to the Kergulen Islands and then south to Antarctica, where they discover survivors of an earlier doomed expedition.Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849) was a pioneering American author, best known for his horror and macabre works. A member of the Romantic movement, Poe is also credited with helping establish the detective fiction genre. Abandoned by his father and orphaned as a young boy, Poe attended West Point and married his 13-year old cousin in 1835, who died of tuberculosis within two years. Poe struggled to make a living as a writer but his poem THE RAVEN earned him instant success when published in 1845. Poe died mysteriously in 1849, aged just 40.Jules Gabriel Verne (1828-1905) was a French author who, along with British writer H. G. Wells, is considered to be one of the founders of the science fiction genre. Verne wrote about space, air, and underwater travel before navigable aircraft and practical submarines were invented, and before any means of space travel had been devised. He is the second most translated author of all time, only behind Agatha Christie. A number of his books have been made in films several times.
