Sherlock Holmes and the Ley Line Murders is an adventure set around Salisbury Plain, specifically Stonehenge and numerous other ancient monuments which make the locality so intriguing. The dismembered bodies of four men have been found along the ancient ley lines stretching out from Stonehenge and the Press has got everyone panicky with reports of ancient ritualistic sacrifices, everyone except Sherlock Holmes. Holmes goes into fact-finding mode and visits the British Museum's library where an old book points the way to the ancient beliefs and to someone who would be able to provide insight and assistance. Druidic practices have been resurrected and tensions have been generated between British and French devotees arguing over supremacy while Salisbury Plain has come under the gaze of the Army for acquisition. Prussia's victory over France in the Franco-Prussian war some years earlier has led to some paranoia in French circles over France being placed between a unified and powerful Germany and a Britain seemingly increasing the strength of its land forces. All this takes place against the backdrop of negotiations preliminary to France and Britain moving toward an eventual Entente Cordiale which Mycroft Holmes is desperately trying to keep secret lest Germany decides to strike preemptively. Complicating matters is the problem of local owners and land agents, foreign and domestic, manoeuvring toget in on the pending Army land purchases. Mycroft Holmes is forced to intervene personally as Sherlock's investigations begin to focus on probable suspects till a violent climax is reached at Stonehenge. Mycroft Holmes, however, has the last word as all those involved discover just how devious the man can be.
