The book is based on the materials of lectures on mathematical biohydrodynamics given by the author at the conference of the National Science Foundation (July 16-29, 1973) at the Rensseller Polytechnic Institute (Troy, New York). Much of the material was published in such leading journals as the Annual review of Fluid Mechanics and the Journal of Fluid Mechanics. The book presents the methods and style of research of the author, who made a significant contribution to the development of this direction in dynamics in the twentieth century: various mechanisms for achieving high speeds and maneuverability (using wave energy, reducing fluid resistance and optimal driving modes), as well as issues of internal biohydrodynamics related to the propagation of wave disturbances, the role of vortex processes and elasticity of vessel walls.
