Grouper's Laws is an archetypal novel about the high school experience of young men who don't belong to any and "in-crowds." The protagonist, Blondie Reimer, new to Fenton High School, is recruited into a group of misfits trying to establish their own and "club." In their attempts to be cool, they engage in a number of ill-fated, often humorous, adventures, which Blondie ultimately recognizes as self-destructive. He is most drawn to the Grouper, an odd-shaped fellow with a large head who looks like a grouper fish, and like the fish, lives in depths Blondie only begins to discover during the course of the book. Grouper's function in the club is to observe the behaviors of his classmates and enunciate laws that explain them - e.g., and "A beer is a man's best friend and " or and "A woman's virtue is a matter of circumstances." A major theme of Grouper's Laws is the danger of a romantic approach to life, as Blondie discovers in his pursuit of the elusive Tammy Hollander. Grouper's Laws is a book for all those who ever went to high school or are doing so now.
