G. Spenser (1820-1903) is called the first philosopher of Victorian England. He expressed the Victorian era in an intellectually systematic form, just like, say, C. Dickens, in a literary and artistic one. G. Spenser believed that the development of knowledge, the success of philosophy, science and technology will ultimately ensure victory over the difficulties of the present. His main insight, permeating and uniting the entire scientific picture of the world proposed by him, is the doctrine of evolution. Without claiming a final explanation of the causes of evolution, he tries to reveal its universal forms and patterns of flow, in their most general features inherent in the development of inanimate and living nature, society and the human individual.
