In 2005, railways officially turned 180 years old. This event is devoted to a book in which an attempt is made in the form of small essays to show certain aspects of the complex process of the formation and development of railways, the evolution of technical means and technologies, to emphasize the role and significance of railways in the life of society, to recall some undeservedly forgotten names, to tell about funny and tragic episodes of these two hundred "railway" years.
