The History of the Underground Jewish Military Self-Defense Organization (Haganah), which became the core of the IDF (Tzahal). The book offered to the reader in two volumes is based on an eight-volume work on the history of the Haganah. This work - the fruit of many years of research by historians and people who devoted their activities and lives to the Haganah - was initiated by S. Avigur, edited by Professor Heb. history of the University of Jerusalem B.-C. Dinura. The organization, known as the Haganah, was one of the foundations on which Israel's independence was built. Haganah means defense. In fact, this is a translation of the Russian term self-defense, which arose in the days of the wave of pogroms that swept across Russia during the first revolution, at the end of 1905. Just as the Palestinian movement Hovevei Zion was a response to the pogroms of 1881, so the idea of self-defense was an expression of the decision of the active part of the Jewish society of Russia to resist the new wave of pogroms that began with the Chisinau pogrom in 1903 and hit hundreds of Jewish and communities in October and November 1905.
