Set in the nineteenth century, this story traces a Carolina planter's trek through the South while trying to fulfill the deathbed wish of his former That he and "take care of and " her teen age daughter. With his law degree, his wife and his new charge, he departs the plantation looking for a life and career in the Post-reconstruction South. Then things start falling apart.
