Since 1954, a number of flying laboratories have been created on the basis of the Tu-16. The largest group of Tu-16LL aircraft were universal flying laboratories for testing turbojet engines. The first of these turbojet engines was the AL-7F, for which by September 1, 1955, aircraft No. 1880403 was converted. In total, nine Tu-16s were converted for engine testing. At the same time, all weapons were removed from the aircraft, the cargo compartment doors were replaced with special fairings, different in shape depending on the engine being suspended (turbojet engines with an outer diameter of up to 2 meters were tested).
