In 1884-1888, Sluchevsky traveled to the north and west of Russia in the retinue of Grand Duke Vladimir Alexandrovich as a journalist-writer. The result of the travels were essays "On the North of Russia" and "On the North-West of Russia." The pages of his book contain many observations about the nature, life of the population and cities.
