The Tay Shon Uprising is the largest popular movement in Vietnam of the 18th century, an outstanding event in the history of the Vietnamese people. However, until now it has hardly been covered in Soviet historical literature. The study of this movement makes it possible to more clearly imagine the main features of the socio-economic system of Vietnam on the eve of its conquest by the French colonialists, to understand the peculiarities of the struggle of the peasantry in Vietnam of this period. The documents by which the author could study the Tay-shon movement are far from equivalent. If they provide quite a lot of material about political and especially military events, then they contain incomparably less information on economic history. Therefore, some questions were not fully reflected in the book. When getting acquainted with the book, the reader should also not forget that it is one of the first attempts to cover the history of pre-colonial Vietnam in Soviet historiography.
