The book gives a general outline of the upper reaches of Panj, as well as information on the history, everyday life, traditions and traditions of the highlanders inhabiting the described places. The book is interesting in that the moment of the events described came at a time when European influence had not yet left a noticeable imprint on the identity of the Pamir peoples.
